In the sheriff's station interrogation room, Gary Braver shifted uneasily in the hard metal chair, his wrists cuffed to the table in front of him, his red-rimmed eyes darting nervously between the two officers who sat on the other side of the table.

"I'm so sorry! I never should have gone to Prairie Winds that night. I know what I did was wrong," he jabbered. "I was just so hungry, and they had so much food. I felt like it would be okay to take some. But it was stupid and wrong. I wish I could go back and not do it!"

Beckett leaned forward, her expression soft and sympathetic. "I know, Gary. These are tough times, and tough times make good people do desperate things."

Carter scoffed, his arms crossed over his chest. "Desperate is one thing. Breaking into someone's home and attacking a woman in her bed is another."

Gary's eyes widened in horror. "No! That wasn't me! It was Lucas! Lucas Brooks! He's the one who went after that poor lady!"

"Yes…" Beckett looked at some notes on a pad in her hand. "Yes, the report backs that up." She glanced at Gary with kind eyes. "But you're a man with higher morals than that. Surely you knew you were in with some bad apples."

"Yeah, but… it's like I told you! I thought we were just going for food!" Tears spilled down Gary's grimy cheeks. "I didn't know Lucas was gonna do something so awful. I never would have gone with him if I'd known. You've gotta believe me!"

Beckett placed a gentle hand on his arm. "I do, Gary. I do. But we have to know… did Lucas put you up to this. Or someone else?"

"It was both of them. Lucas and that DeMarco kid. But DeMarco was just in it for food, like me! If you're looking for the real criminal here, it's Lucas!"

"All right, stop sniveling," Carter spat.

He strode to the door and banged a fist on the wood, and Officer Ambrose came in. "Yes, sir?"

"Get this crybaby out of my sight and put him back in his cage." Ambrose moved in and unlocked Gary's cuffs, and the broken man offered no resistance but dragging feet as she escorted him out. As soon as he was gone, Carter let out a long breath and leaned against the wall. "Well, if that poor guy knew anything, he'd put it in writing, have it notarized, then swear on his mother's grave it was true."

"Agreed. That was a dead end," Beckett admitted. "So… Brooks next?"

"Yeah. But this time I want to play the Good Cop."
